New Mapex Black Panther Snare Drums

New Mapex Black Panther Snare Drums

Kev Morley |

The iconic Black Panther range of snare drums from Mapex has been completely revamped for 2020. Fourteen new models have been introduced, redesigning every aspect of these much-loved drums from the ground up.

It was important to Mapex that the overall character of the series remained in place whilst at the same time introducing new sizes, features, and materials. Sizes range from a small 10" auxiliary steel snare called the "Wasp" to the 7" deep 11-ply Maple "Solidus". Similar to the outgoing Black Panther range, each drum has its own unique specification which includes six metal shell drums and eight with wood shells. In my opinion, the stand out drum in the range is probably the 14"x6" copper shell "Predator", I'm a big fan of the warm, darker tone a copper shell snare drum produces and I think it's great that Mapex has been able to introduce this drum at a price point that's isn't out of the reach of most drummers.

Mapex will also be introducing the new Design Lab Artist Series models later this year. The Craig Blundell 'Machine' & Jeff Hamilton 'Maximus' will complement the existing Russ Miller 'Versatus' & Chris Adler 'Warbird' snares. More on those soon.

The new Black Panther range starts to arrive in the UK at the end of June, check them out here.
